MACRON’S UNTRUTH

Brazilian agribusiness has been built over time with investments in knowledge and technology that have turned it into an international benchmark. This model has been followed, with the appropriate adaptations, by sectors such as those of soybean, animal protein, sugar and alcohol, oranges, coffee, etc.

The case of soy is a great example. Today, Brazil is the world’s largest soybean producer and exporter and all Brazilian production is concentrated in the country’s Midwestern and Southern regions. Soybean production in the state of Amazonas is small, with a share of just 0.1% in value in Brazilian soybean exports in 2020.

Such success is great cause for concern because Brazil uses only 9% of its territory for agricultural production, which reveals that it does not need the Amazon to expand its agribusiness. And, as if the abundance of land were not enough, Brazil still has a plentiful supply of fresh water and an ideal climate to reap successful crops.

The scale of this panorama not only bothers the competition, it also has it terrified.

This picture, by itself, explains the factors that led the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, to recently speak out in an attempt to link Brazil’s soybean production to deforestation of the Amazon. Pinocchio would be ashamed.

Due to his immense difficulty to compete, the only strategy available to the French President is to desperately try to disqualify the competitor, using the same boring repetition knowingly discredited due to its total inaccuracy.

Everything is false in President Macron’s remark. The Amazon region offers limited soybean production; Brazil does not need the Amazon to expand its production of soybeans (or any other product) and, especially, using the Amazon rainforest to try and tarnish Brazilian soybeans is outrageous when everyone knows that the coveted wealth is actually underground.

It is a shame that President Macron should utter such a deceitful discourse which calls for an exact reply for the truth to prevail.
